In December 2011, after more than 23 years of construction, the first line of Kazakstan’s Almaty Metro opened for public use. The line is only the second underground metro in Central Asia and construction of the $1 billion USD project originally commenced in 1988. After the collapse of the Soviet Union, construction halted and was only recently reinitiated in 2005. The line is more than 8.5 km in length and is made up of seven beautifully- designed, marble-floored stations. The subway line is expected to serve over 30,000 daily commuters. The construction of additional stations in currently underway, which will have metro running on over 45km.
